Hi Lee,
I hope you're feeling better soon. Since you have a command of the pain meds; I'll just mention that a nice cup of tea or coffee can work synergistically with the pain meds (that's the caffeine).
omg i got up and tripped over some cases i had on the floor.
i landed on my forehead, left knee and left fist.. my glasses moved up and dug into my forehead so i have some pretty interesting marks there.. i have a doctor who lives two doors down from me and he came over and checked me out.. i didn't lose consciousness or have other signs of concussion.
no broken bones.. but i am sore all over.. my doctor friend said if i have any problems to call him.

Bonnie_Clyde,
Joe Rutherford told one of his buddies at Bethel that when he was a kid he worked at selling books and one time fell into a freezing cold river, nearly dying. According to his friend, his lung problems started at that time. No doubt he just mixed up some of the details of his personal experience by accident. He was chosen by God, you know.

Slidin Fast cited the life experience of SANDRA COWAN (and her husband BILL) in the WATCHTOWER exerpt above.
Did she see her dream of Beth-Sarim-like luxurious living fulfilled?
She was born in 1939. She'd be 71 today. She was baptized at SIX and became a pioneer that same year.
Here's some of her wonderful experience in the full-time volunteer book-selling business (from the same article):
"...I got to see Gilead School for the first time. I remember standing in one of the classrooms and saying to myself, ‘I'm not quite 11 years old. I'll never get to come here. Armageddon will come first.' But that visit made me more determined than ever to make Gilead my goal...
How's that working out for you, Sandy?
...We wrote the Society asking for an assignment and one month before our wedding, we received one in Romney, West Virginia. We moved there on our way to the New York convention in 1958...
...We lived in a 16-foot [5 m] homemade trailer designed for California weather. We had no running water, no heat, and no refrigerator. It got so cold inside that we had to break the ice in the bucket to get water. The brothers helped us as much as they could, sharing the food they had hunted. We ate deer, raccoon, and squirrel. More than once we thought that we would have nothing to eat for the day, and then when we got home from service, we would find some apples or cheese left in front of our door.
Mmmm, just like Beth Sarim, eh Sandy?
Truly, Mom set before me a worthwhile goal! If she were still alive, I'd love to tell her again, "Thank you, Mom!" Happily, I can still say, "Thanks, Dad!"
Sorry to hear your Mom didn't live through Armageddon. Was she disappointed, Sandy? Will YOU be disappointed when YOU don't live through Armageeddon?
Thanks for selling all those books, sucker!

Once the property is SOLD, the original deed becomes irrelevant. The property now belongs to someone else who is free to use it for his purposes.
Abraham, Issaac, Jacob, David and Ezekiel will have to live in a van down by the river.
They'll be pissed, but there's nuthin' they can do about it.

It is especially amusing how when the WTB&TS finally sold the Beth Sarim property, the WTB&TS said it "had fully served its purpose."
In the deed to the property and in public relations efforts, the WATCHTOWER said the mansion would serve as a residence of the soon-to-be resurrected "men of old;" yet it was not occupied for one nanosecond by any of the "ancient worthies".
It WAS occupied by the spirits of Jim Bean, Johnny Walker, Jack Daniels and other distillers of repute.
i have been doing some research on the early presidents of the wt and the gb.
i was struck that as far as i can discover, there is no record of any of them (russell, rutherford, f. franz) having children?
have any of the subsequent presidents had any children, or any of the current gb members?.
Another person worthy of note is HAYDEN C. COVINTON (b. 1911, d. 1978).
Covington served as legal counsel for the WTB&TS from 1939 to 1969. He was the sucessor to Olin R. Moyle, who had been ousted in 1939 because Moyle complained about Rutherford's indulgence in alcohol and foul language.
As reported in Wikipedia, Hayden Covington was even elected Vice-President of the Watch Tower Society succeeding the newly elected President, Nathan H. Knorr, despite having been a Jehovah's Witnesses for only five years. Throughout most of its history, appointment to the board of directors of the Watch Tower Society, and thus by implication to the "Governing Body" of Jehovah's Witnesses, has been limited to those professing to be of the "anointed class" within the group; the "spirit begotten" sons of God who would "rule as Kings" in heaven with Christ. To date, the one exception has been Hayden C. Covington. A subsequent policy change resulted in Covington's resignation from the Vice Presidency and departure from the board in 1945, although remaining on staff as legal counsel.
Like his friend Judge Rutherford, Covington had an affinity for ethanol, and after he left the services of the WTB&TS his wife Dorothy was the primary breadwinner in his family.
Covington was married and had two children, a daughter, Lynn Lee Covinton, and a son, Lane Christian Covinton. According to Ohio public records, in 1988 at age 25, Lane Covington committed suicide by hanging himself.
this was a tangent from another thread in which we were debating faith and science... psacramento (thx) rightly pointed out that i was digressing so here' s a new thread.. .
imo, it all comes down to (religious) people trying to pin an absolute answer on an unexplained event.
(ie, the first cause = creation by judeo-christian god, holy spirit coming upon someone, or a demon experience...).
3. Imaginative flights of fancy.
4. Fear of the unknown.
5. Fear of the unfamiliar.
6. Reliance on ancient goatherder's tales.
i gets me almost into a frezy when witnesses use this asinine argument.. if jws were ever the reason for bloodless surgery reasearch it was because doctors were tired of having to let you guys die.
they found a way to keep your asses alive even with your ridiculous superstitions!
you should thank the doctors of this world for having such love and compassion.... -sab.
I think they can take credit for the evolution of CHILD PROTECTIVE LAW.
I wonder how they like the fit of THAT shoe?
i know this is a pointless question, but what if this happened:.
you came home from work one day, sat down, and turned on the tv.
there is a sudden announcement that the un has banned all religion.
Hi BrotherDan,
The "flying saucer cult" book to which you refer is "WHEN PROPHECY FAILS" by Festinger, Riecken, & Schachter © 1959.
This is a very interesting book. The forward to the book tells us,
"... All of the persons and places we mention have been given fictitious names and any resemblance between these names and those of actual people anywhere is unintentional. We have not changed the essential nature of any of the events we report, but by the disguises employed we have tried to protect the actual people involved in the movement from the curiousity of an unsympathetic reader..."
One consequence of the flagrant name-changing the authors engaged in is that it is completely IMPOSSIBLE to verify that the book is really based on ANY "actual events." It may be as "real" as Castenada's works.
For example, the newspaper quoted from in the book seems to have never existed.
This doesn't decrease the book's value as a "teaching story" of sorts. I think that the psychological insights it offers are valid.
I'm just not eager to say anythin in the book really happened. It *COULD* have happened, perhaps, but I certainly can't be sure it did.
